Medical Reserve Corps / Cities Readiness Initiative Training Workshop - On March 19, 2011 the Kentucky Department for Public Health offered a free work-shop to provide training for volunteers who are interested in offering assistance during public health emergencies. The purpose of this event is to improve the region’s emergency response capabilities by strengthening our capacity to provide services to people.
This was an opportunity for everyone to be involved and active in the preparations and the programs that serve the people of this community and region. The workshop was for the Medical Reserve Corps, and was open to anyone above the age of 18 who is interested in helping. Everyone was invited and welcome, and encouraged to attend regardless of whether or not they have any experience in medical or healthcare professions.
Workshop attendees experienced informative and educational morning sessions, and afternoon activities provided opportunities to practice and apply the knowledge they gained.
The workshop included: Orientation and training for the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) An introduction to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Opportunities to set up and practice operating two different types of Points of Dispensing (PODs). An opportunity to set up and practice Functional Needs Support Services (FNSS)
One of the key public health response challenges in Kentucky is to swiftly and completely provide critical interventions during emergencies. Programs like the Medical Reserve Corps help to significantly reduce the suffering that would typically be associated with a public health emergency or a catastrophic event. Volunteers are an absolute requirement for ensuring the success of these programs.
We explained some strategies and methods that are used to integrate and coordinate emergency management efforts, and provided guidance and tools for volunteers to use to help us meet the needs of our fellow citizens. Attendees who currently are not members of the Medical Reserve Corps will have the opportunity to join.
